What you should know about stained garments
Putting together a wardrobe these days is an expensive investment regardless of whether your clothes are for work or socializing they need to be cared for just the same as you would maintain your home or your car. In order to help our customers give better care for their clothing we have put together a list of what you should or shouldn’t do in caring for your garments.
When food or drink is dropped on your clothes the first reaction most people have is to grab a serviette or a damp cloth and wipe it off then try and rub the stain out. This is the worst thing you can do, by doing this you are rubbing the food or drink deeper into the fabric and making the stain harder to remove.
Trying to rub out the stain will wear the fibers of the fabric in one spot and possibly even remove color
If it is food you have dropped and that food had lumps of for example meat, chicken or whatever gently lift off the lumps of food with a dry serviette or cloth and do not touch the stain itself.
Do not use a colored serviette or cloth as color may transfer onto your garment
There are many old wives tales about removing stains for example with soda water or whatever else is suggested but they may not do anything other than seal the stain in.
If your stained garment is washable you may be tempted to use a supermarket stain remover of which there are many brands available but depending on the stain these products do not always work and again you risk sealing in the stain.
The best thing you can do is to do nothing until you can get your garment to the Drycleaners as soon as you possibly can for the stain to be removed professionally.
A good drycleaner can work on the stain with a much better chance of removal and without damage to the fabric.
To try and save on cost by trying to remove the stain yourself may end up costing you much more in the end.
Our drycleaners have many different types of stain removers and techniques available to them for removing stains and with different types of fabrics they know exactly what to use on whatever the fabric is. They will have a better chance at removing the stain than you will with an overall stain remover from the supermarket.
With some fabrics it is much more difficult to remove stains such as silk or linen as it is very easy to do damage by lifting color from the stained area and this is where an experienced drycleaner is needed.
With bedding we do not spot clean prior to dry-cleaning or washing as the stain will usually penetrate the outer fabric of the doona filling which is only a thin cotton layer and spot cleaning can cause damage but after cleaning your doona will be sanitized and smell fresh.
